Severe Weather Response

4/17/2011 12:05:41 AM

A massive storm system passed through North Carolina on April 16, spawning numerous tornadoes and causing substantial devastation in parts of North Carolina. Our thoughts and prayers are with the communities that are recovering from the storm damage, especially those who lost family members.

Public power communities were largely spared massive destruction from the storm. In the areas where customers did lose power, local public power line crews worked to quickly repair lines and service while keeping everyone safe.  Several communities had line crews that worked well into Sunday morning to restore power. Clean up efforts will be on-going for many days.

Fortunately, most of our members suffered little or no damage from the storm, however a few members had significant outages due to losing a circuit or transmission line.

• High Point lost two circuits which affected about 1,100 customers but power was restored in about an hour.

• Wilson took a direct hit from a tornado which damaged many homes and businesses and took out a transmission line from Progress Energy that served four substations (fortunately no fatalities or serious injuries were reported).  When this occurred, 14,500 customers lost power.  It took Wilson’s crews about 2.5 hours to fix the problem and restore power to about half of the customers.  By Sunday morning the crews were able to restore power to all but about 250 customers.

Currently, less than 50 customers are without power but these have structural damage and require inspection before power can be restored.

•  Smithfield lost power to about 1,500 customers but had service restored to all but 20 customers by 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

Several neighboring communities sent crews to affected areas, including:

• Greenville Utilities Commission sent crews to Wilson to assist with their restoration efforts.

• Ayden and Winterville sent crews to assist Farmville.
