Hayes Receives Public Power Lifetime Achievement Award

Granite Falls Mayor Barry Hayes was presented the Public Power Lifetime Achievement award at the ElectriCities 2011 Annual Conference in Asheville on August 26.
The award recognizes individual contributions throughout a lifetime of service to local electric systems, NC Public Power and public power nationwide. The award is given based on leadership, public power service, innovation and creativity and longevity of service to public power.

 

Hayes’ career in local government spans 28 years, when he began his service on the Granite Falls Town Council in 1983. He spent 14 years on the council and was elected mayor in 1997. For most of his time as a council member, he also served as chairman of the town’s Electric Committee.

 

In addition, Hayes served on the ElectriCities Board of Directors from 2000 through 2008, including serving in leadership roles for three years. He was Chairman of the ElectriCities Board in 2005. He has been a member of the North Carolina Municipal Power Agency Number 1 (NCMPA1) for many years.

 

“Mayor Hayes is a friend to North Carolina Municipal Power Agency 1 and to ElectriCities and has lent his talents and abilities to public power for many years,” said Jennie Stultz, mayor of Gastonia and chairman of the ElectriCities Board of Directors.

 

Hayes is a graduate of Western Carolina University and is president of Hayes Chemical, a provider of water treatment chemicals and equipment to industrial, commercial and residential customer throughout North Carolina. He served on the Western Piedmont Council of Government’s Policy Board for nearly 20 years and was elected to COG’s Executive Committee in 1987, including service as chairman. He has led many community initiatives, including work on the 1996 Olympic Games. He served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Regional Councils from 1995 through 1998.
