Public Power Week

October 4-10, 2009

Public Power Week is an annual event, occurring the first full week in October. NC Public Power communities celebrate Public Power Week each year with a variety of events in their local community, from energy fairs to customer appreciation days to educational talks to school groups.

All of these events raise awareness of NC Public Power and the value of city-owned electric service to municipalities. More than 70 cities and towns in North Carolina provide safe and reliable power to their citizens and industry. Many of these cities and towns have been electric providers for over 100 years. In North Carolina, public power serves more than 500,000 customers. Public power utilities are operated by local governments as a public service – just like fire and police departments. Their mission is to provide electricity at a reasonable cost.

Public power utilities are well-equipped for excellent service. Electric department employees live in the communities they serve; customers know electric department employees are readily available if problems arise. Public power communities provide excellent, local customer service. Public power communities restore power faster than other utilities because the crews are local and other public power cities help other cities in need.

There are over 2,000 public power utilities across the country. Some of the nation’s largest cities – Los Angeles, San Antonio, Seattle, and Orlando – operate publicly- owned electric utilities, but many public power communities are small, with their utilities serving 3,000 or fewer customers.
